ABOUT COMMON WEALTH MURALS

Since 2019 Common Wealth Murals (CWM) has facilitated the creation of more than 40 murals, working with muralists from the US, Latin America and Europe. Over half of these murals were created using a community-engaged process which has involved several thousand people in the design and painting of the murals.

CWM is the co-founder and co-facilitator of the Community Mural Institute (CMI), an intensive training for artists and emerging muralists to learn techniques for community-engaged mural creation. The CMI includes classroom instruction and hands-on training, networking with established muralists, and supplemental training opportunities for the participants. 60% of CMI artists are BIPOC and 60% are women.

CWM produces Fresh Paint Springfield, an annual mural festival bringing neighborhood-specific fine art to diverse neighborhoods across Springfield.

These murals, paid training programs, and other public art projects have provided commissions, training, and exhibit opportunities to just under 200 artists since 2019, 53% of whom are BIPOC and 38% are women.

CWM also collaborates in the production of the Springfield’s annual graffiti jam, and has produced window installations, bike kiosk installations, sidewalk art installations, and other temporary public art installations.
