COMMISSION A MURAL

Murals transform nondescript walls into dynamic and compelling works of art. They activate neighborhood spaces and create landmarks out of previously unremarkable buildings. Murals are accessible to people of all ages and walks of life, free of charge. A mural can communicate a vision, idea, values or stories that resonate with and reflect the people and cultures in your community, organization or business.

We provide start-to-finish mural project management to organizations and businesses who want to install a mural on their building. We work closely with you to clarify your goals and vision for the mural, find a professional muralist who can bring that vision to life, and manage all of the logistics of the mural installation, so that you end up with a mural that you love, hassle-free.

We specialize in working with muralists who practice community-engaged mural making. Community muralists involve your organization, community or customers in identifying resonant ideas, themes and images for the mural design and then host community painting events so everyone can lend a hand painting. The muralist then does all the detail work and installation so the final mural is a true work of art.

How much does a mural cost?

Murals are permanent, large-scale original works of fine art. We use professional-grade materials so that the mural is vibrant and long-lasting. Our muralists are trained professionals who dedicate many days to the design and painting of your mural.

The cost of a mural is based on the size of the wall, the experience of the muralist, and whether or not you engage the community in the process. A small wall painted by an early-career muralist may cost as little as $6,000. A large mural, done by an experienced muralist using a community-engaged process can cost $75,000 or more

Matching Fund for Murals for Nonprofits and Small Businesses

Murals can be expensive. Until June 1, 2023 small businesses and nonprofit organizations can apply for assistance paying for a mural on their building.

Common Wealth Murals has received funding to cover some of the cost of a murals for eligible businesses or organizations. The funding matches your organization's or business contribution (up to $5,000).

For example, if an organization can pay $4,000 for a mural, the Matching Fund will match that with another $4,000, making the total project budget $8,000.

Small businesses and organizations can apply. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until all funds have been used. The goal is to use the matching funds for 3 or 4 murals each in Springfield, West Springfield and Chicopee. If, by June 1, 2023, 3 mural hosts have not been selected in one of the three eligible cities, those funds will be redirected to the other cities based on demand.
